Perspective
Type concept, graphic design and visual communication for the exhibition project by artist Caecilia Lahutte Nims.
PICA - Display
The exhibition project by artist Caecilia Lahutte Nims was developed within the teaching degree program at the Institute for Art Education at Goethe University Frankfurt.
The focus was on sculpture and artistic spatial concepts under the supervision of Professor Leunora Salihu.
For the exhibition theme “Perspective”, the display typeface PICA was created as an interface between type design, exhibition design and visual communication, inspired by the aesthetics of coded systems.
Challenge
Making the visible invisible.
QR codes are functional, precise and often unobtrusive. Art should be visible, tangible and surprising. The challenge was to translate the logic of coded systems into an independent visual system for exhibition communication without losing conceptual complexity. The custom-developed display typeface PICA condenses this idea into a coded yet sensorial visual language.
Approach
Angular instead of round. Precise and compact.
The typeface PICA is based on QR-code aesthetics: built from squares, circles and lines, compact, precise and distinctive. The result is a recognizable type design for poster design, graphic communication and spatial applications in an exhibition context.
Implementation
Idea. Concept. Realization.
Concept, font design, editorial design and graphic design were developed as one consistent process. The idea started with analog sketches and was then translated into an editable type system in Illustrator. Based on that system, poster design and exhibition media were created in InDesign and Photoshop as coherent visual communication for print and space.
